What's new:
What's new at LaserNet -- 2001

We were very busy in the first part of 2001, with many Spring Break activities and other festivals. The tone of the year irrevocably turned after the tragic September 11 attacks. Some solace was found in doing our annual Christmas pageant, and in looking forward to a new year.

The holiday season saw us performing a couple of annual events. The first show was for the 25th Anniversary Christmas Pageant for the University Baptist Church. We used our 10-Watt white light laser projector, as well as two LaserXpress systems to project beams and holiday graphics.

We rung in 2002 with our other event, the City of Miami New Year's Eve celebration at Bayfront Park. The Tower of Light used its 20-Watt Argon laser to project holiday images and a countdown to the New Year onto the face of the Intercontinental Hotel which was simulcast with New York's Times Square!

Hockey, Hockey, Hockey! October 6 saw us at two season openers. The Florida Panthers professional team featured our "three-headed monster" 20-Watt YAG system shooting up from the ice while our 10-Watt white light laser shot beams down from the catwalk above the ice! In addition, we placed 2 PANI projectors at each end of the rink and shot hockey images down onto the ice.

At the same time we did the Miami show, a second crew was in East Lansing, Michigan for the "World's Largest Outdoor Hockey Game". It's true, Michigan State University converted their football stadium into a hockey arena for October 6th and we provided the entertainment between the second and third periods!
The 10-minute show featured high powered white light laser graphics projected onto the ice and a high powered YAG (another of our three-headed monsters) shooting up over the stands. It was the arch rivalry game between Michigan State University and University of Michigan which skated to a 3-3 tie.
A fitting ending for an incredible Guinness World Record Event. 72,000 screaming hockey fans saw our show!

We have been working on system installations in Colombia and on Celebrity Cruise Line's latest ship, GT Summit. Both installations feature high powered high light lasers with our "Tilt-Top" LaserPro projectors.

September 11, 2001: The day no one will ever forget saw us on a plane headed for Boston. In flight, our plane was told to land at the next available airport. Once on the ground in Norfolk, VA, we were told of the horrible events in New York City, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. In utter disbelief at these tragic terrorist acts, we rented a car and drove back to Miami, as our event had of course been canceled.

August
2001

This month brought us to the Caribbean again for two music festivals in Jamaica: Montego Bay's Reggae Sumfest at the beginning of August and Sashi at the end of the month.
The Sumfest featured two of our 5-Watt white light and ScannerPro laser systems and for the first time, a 15-Watt RED YAG laser system scanning over the audience!

Lighting Dimensions Magazine featured one of our club installations - South Beach's Krave. This is the third time one of our nightclub laser installations has been featured in the prestigious magazine's annual club review issue. A 5-Watt Argon laser with a ScannerPro projector featuring CTI scanners creates the beams and aerial/graphics for this high energy dance club.

One of our Fourth of July shows saw us in action for the Seminole Indian Tribe. What was unique about this event was the weather. Rain, the dread of all outdoor events was everywhere, but at our 2 square mile event site. Nonetheless, we had to be ready for any sudden power down.

We travelled to Santo Domingo for the Latin Music Festival featuring all the hottest Latin music stars, including Mark Anthony. This event was held in Olympic Station and 50,000 attended each of the three nights.
Our 40-Watt YAG laser, split into 3 FiberPro projectors (our three-headed monster), was positioned on stage for maximum impact. Our 20-Watt argon laser blended with a 5-Watt krypton laser was located at the rear of the stadium and projected graphics images onto the screens at the far left and right of the stage.
Power and water are always a challenge, but in this situation the stadium's entire water system had to be shut down to tie the lasers into the system. Sometimes it 's better not to ask why...

We were all really busy with two highlights being the St. Lucia Jazz festival and the rededication of the Miami Freedom Tower.

Shipping and traveling laser gear and people to a Caribbean Island is always a challenge, but the St. Lucia Jazz Festival made up for any inconvenience. Our 20-Watt YAG and 5-Watt white light systems added to the magic of the festival. Plus, shooting laser beams against the backdrop of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean made it unforgettable.

Miami's Freedom Tower was built in the early part of the 20th century and it served as an immigration station just like Ellis Island in New York. The Tower has changed hands many times through the years and now has been selected to become a museum dedicated to freedom lovers and especially to the Cubans who have risked everything to flee the tyranny of their native land. A huge rededication ceremony highlighted with pyro and laser beams brought downtown Miami to a standstill.

We had the honor of participating in the 54th Annual Horatio Alger Awards meeting in Washington DC. It is not often that you can make that statement, but that is exactly the feeling our entire crew felt after the show.
The association, which celebrates the "American Dream", (ordinary people starting with nothing, and rising to top) makes scholarship awards to deserving young students. Several of the students' personal stories of serious hardships they had overcome made them perfect recipients for the scholarships.
Our high-powered lasers blended expertly with the introduction of the new members and served as the finale for the event with the motivational song "Reach" by Gloria Estefan.

March
2001

March is Spring Break time and we jumped in with both feet! We had two locations covered simultaneously with white light, full color laser systems, including mirror-bouncing beams, and our 20-Watt YAG laser "three-headed monsters".
Panama City Beach and South Padre Island will never be the same as the Spring Breakers danced to the music and our shows. We couldn't believe the wet t-shirt contests in the 40 degree weather. These kids were there to party!

As soon as the Spring Break shows ended, we did the Ultra3 2001 Electronic Music Festival in downtown Miami. This annual event, held during the Winter Music Conference, drew over 20,000 fanatics that danced their brains out 12 different stages for over 12 hours. Our lasers were featured at three of the main stages and added to the visual experience. Are you experienced?

We went to Club Med for the unveiling of the latest Skidoo water cycle. Our 10-Watt white light laser system circled the Skidoo in an amazing laser cone and the logos and beams bounced throughout the huge tent that held the event. (This Club Med was in Florida…Darn!)

A first for LaserNet, celebrating the Chinese New Year in Las Vegas. Based on our successful New Year's Eve show at the Bellagio, we were invited back for the Chinese celebration. The Chinese version of Frank Sinatra belted out tunes that everyone enjoyed, of course, we didn't understand a word, but when you've got rhythm, everything looks good.

New Year's
2001

How many times have we heard Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001 theme)? It's not that we never want to hear it again, but enough already. We did our New Year's Eve shows for the real Millennium, AND, got the t-shirt!!! Even though the public's perception wasn't as strong as New Year's 2000, we still were quite busy:
  • The new outdoor mall in West Palm Beach featured our countdown and beams for the New Year.
  • At the Bellagio in Las Vegas, we wowed them with a YAG aerials and a countdown.
  • And, for the second year in a row, we had our 60-Watt YAG on the roof of the Capitol building in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
