Carnival Dream offers high-energy laser shows

Carnival Cruise Lines’ new 130,000-ton Carnival Dream introduces the line’s first outdoor laser shows. They combine the latest in LaserNet laser technology with rock music to provide guests a unique and exciting nighttime entertainment option. Carnival Dream’s laser light shows are the first ever for a North America–based cruise ship.

The 15-minute nighttime laser shows feature choreographed lasers projecting brilliant aerial patterns of blue, red and green set to music by popular artists such as Styx, Rush, Van Halen, Boston and Pink Floyd.

Smoke machines are used to enhance the laser light effects in the starry, moonlit sky, creating an ideal setting for guests to relax on Carnival Dream’s expansive open deck.

Four all-weather LaserNet ScannerPro lasers are positioned high atop Carnival Dream’s Lido Deck. Each high-wattage laser is independently computer controlled using Pangolin Laser Designer software that synchronizes the laser light show in perfect time with the music, which is amplified by the 70,000-watt sound system of the ship’s Seaside Theatre LED screen. The Seaside Theatre’s jumbo-sized monitor also displays custom-designed graphics and original music videos of the various artists played during the laser show.

“The idea of a spectacular laser light show set to high-energy music from the deck of a cruise ship is truly unique and provides Carnival Dream guests with a memorable, one-of-a-kind entertainment experience that they can’t find anywhere else,” said Roger Blum, Carnival’s vice president of cruise programming.

LaserNet announces delivery of "Triplets" to Carnival's newest ship

Three of LaserNet’s latest pride and joys, the new 5.2 Watts RGB, White light ScannerPro’s, were delivered and are awaiting installation onto the newest Carnival ship, DREAM. First passengers are scheduled to set sail on the new vessel in September 2009. The ScannerPro’s will service the main show lounge in support of Carnival’s famous Las Vegas style review creating full color aerial effects and precision beam grids.

Each weighing in at a mere 89 pounds (40.45Kg) these units are no weaklings. The bright white color balance allows for the creation of any color through the Pangolin control software. The unit’s tight culminated beam is perfect for creating the 3-dimensional beam grids of laser light bouncing off the 80 first surface bounce mirrors included in the delivery.

These babies measure a compact 25.5” x 15.5” x 10” (648 x 394 x 254mm) allowing for easy installation into the crowded lighting panels on board the ship. Plus, these air-cooled units barely break a sweat during their operation.

According to LaserNet’s President, Tom Harman, “Our chief designer, Horacio Pugliese, has created an amazing new tool for any lighting designer. The color balance and beam quality is the best I’ve ever seen and as the technology is improving, so are we. Laser beams are here to stay and we plan to be in the forefront of the evolution.”

This press release was published in PLSN Magazine. A link is here.

ClubWorld magazine announces "Lasers Are Back"

LaserNet was the subject of the cover article in the December 2008 ClubWorld magazine. It begins "nothing says 'next level' quite like a laser beam shooting and reflecting all over a venue's interior."

The article extensively quotes LaserNet's president Tom Harman and technical supervisor Horatio Pugliese. They describe how lasers are now smaller and easier to use, with DMX and custom (Pangolin) controls. Tom describes "incredible three-dimensional beam grids over the dance floor". He points to new innovations such as SMS text messaging and the potential for audience scanning.

The article includes photos of LaserNet club installations in Miami Beach (Set, Mynt) and Las Vegas (RokVegas).

The entire article is available here as a PDF file.
